Utilizing Skills Mapping and Innovative Credentials to Deliver the Most Direct Career Path

The college student of today seeks the fastest route to a fulfilling and financially rewarding career; as well as a partner for lifelong learning pursuits because of the recognition that a rigid credential only relaying one aspect of the student’s knowledge, skills, and ability will only get the student so far in the rapidly evolving, AI-driven, metamorphosing workplace of today. Understanding that students represent far more than course descriptions and grades, University of Phoenix took the step to reimagine its assessment process to align to skills outcomes and map its curriculum back to workplace needs. This action has created more value to students related to credentialing and mobility opportunities as skills outcomes are becoming more desired by employers. In fact, research from Deloitte finds that skills-based organizations are 107% more likely to place talent effectively and 49% more likely to maximize efficiency. Ideally, as students learn new skills, which are then aligned to career outcomes, learners can capture this learning in more innovative credentials like LERs and leverage their new skills for real-time career opportunity and advancement. Approaches like this can better demonstrate the knowledge, learning and skills accumulated by a worker over their lifetime to provide records that grow and evolve with the student fostering a more equitable match with employers while creating a feedback loop on whether courses and credentials are living up to their purpose. You will also hear from the State University of New York, the largest comprehensive system of public system of higher education in the US about its new strategies to map its catalogue of over 500 microcredentials to skills and jobs in high demand areas, be responsive to student interests and employer needs and create pathways to initial or advanced degrees. Preview SUNY’s new transparent, student-centered website.
