Senior Director, Customer Success

Who We Are

1EdTech global, nonprofit, membership-based consortium shaping how education technology works, and who it works for.

The problems we work on are genuinely hard and genuinely important. Our members are not customers in the traditional sense. They are partners in a shared mission to make education technology work for every learner. If you want to lead a function where the work matters beyond the metrics, this is the place.

We advance the standards that make learning technology interoperable, portable, and trustworthy—from K-20 classrooms to industry credentialing to national policy frameworks. When France mandates interoperability certifications for its national education system, those are ours. When workforce development programs need to connect learning records across systems, we're the infrastructure. When policymakers need a trusted partner to help them think through what good education technology looks like, they call us.

Our strength has always been in our relationships. Now we're investing in the function that makes those relationships last.

Who You Are

You believe that customer success is a craft, not a support function. You've built real experience inside an organization that did it well. You know what structured, proactive engagement looks like because you've worked it. You now want to apply that somewhere the work feels bigger than a renewal rate.

You don't think about member and customer satisfaction as a metric you report on—it's just how you're wired. When a member has a great experience, that means something to you personally. When they don't, it stays with you until it's fixed. The people who work with you know that about you before they ever see your results. That instinct is what we're looking for, because at 1EdTech, our members are not just how we measure success they are how we operate. When they thrive, we thrive. And we want every member to walk away thinking 1EdTech is the best partnership they have.

At 1EdTech, what we do touches millions of learners across the globe. That's not a talking point it's the reason people join us and stay. You want your work to mean something at that scale. You're energized by building, by taking something with genuine momentum and adding the structure that makes it sustainable. You lead with trust, earn credibility by showing up, and know that the best CX models are the ones people actually adopt.

Position Overview

Senior Director, Ecosystem Development (Higher Education)

Position Overview

The Senior Director, Ecosystem Development (Higher Education) leads engagement across a portfolio of strategically important higher education accounts within 1EdTech's Ecosystem Development team. By facilitating the adoption of standards and growing membership from both higher education institutions and technology providers, this role directly strengthens the interconnectedness, value, and overall impact of the 1EdTech ecosystem.

The person in this role drives growth and standards adoption by leveraging their direct experience with higher education institutions and deep understanding of the commercial edtech market. They serve as a bridge between institutional needs and provider solutions, ensuring that membership growth and standards adoption are achieved across the ecosystem. As the single accountable owner, they oversee all relationships with institutional members, affiliated technology providers, and strategic partners in the higher education segment, directly impacting organizational success.

This is a remote position located in the United States. This role reports to the SVP of Ecosystem Development.

Key Responsibilities

Account Ownership

  • Serve as accountable lead for strategic higher education accounts, including both institutional members and connected technology providers.
  • Cultivate and lead relationships at each account, spanning institutional stakeholders, technology providers, and ecosystem partners.
  • Establish and update a clear account view with key stakeholders, priorities, active initiatives, and growth opportunities.
  • Ensure all engagement is coordinated, visible, and aligned across 1EdTech teams.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date account records and document pipeline activity in Salesforce.

Priority Standards Initiatives
This role leads and advances the adoption of three key initiatives in the higher education segment:

  • Edu-API: Drive institutional adoption of Edu-API as the standard for connecting higher education data systems. Engage institutions on the value of interoperable data infrastructure and work with providers to build the supply side of adoption. This is a primary focus of the role.
  • Digital Credentials, CASE®, and CLR: Advance adoption of Open Badges, CASE, and the Comprehensive Learner Record Standard as the foundation for portable, verifiable credentials in higher education. Engage institutions on credential strategy and connect them with the provider ecosystem that supports it.
  • LTI® and interoperability standards: Maintain and deepen institutional commitment to LTI Advantage and related standards, supporting procurement language, implementation guidance, and provider alignment.

Ecosystem Expertise and Consultative Engagement
Bring firsthand knowledge of the higher education ecosystem, earned from inside it. Understand the full range of institutional stakeholders, including IT, teaching and learning, administration, research, accreditation, and the registrar, not just as an organizational chart but as people navigating real operational pressures that interoperability is meant to solve. Use that knowledge to listen well, lead substantive conversations, and make a credible case for what fully interoperable systems built on open standards actually change.

Serve as a trusted resource for institutional members by helping them understand the benefits of standards adoption, the case for requiring conformance certification in procurement, and the role interoperability plays in achieving their strategic goals.

Bring equal depth to the commercial market, understanding key technology players, evolving provider landscape, provider decision-making on certification and standards participation, and opportunities to grow 1EdTech membership on both institutional and provider sides. Top candidates have experience with both perspectives.

Member Growth and Retention

  • Accelerate retention and expansion within assigned accounts by deepening engagement across institutional teams and technology providers, ensuring the sustained influence and reach of 1EdTech standards and initiatives in the higher education ecosystem.
  • Identify and advance new memberships, expanded participation, and deeper involvement in 1EdTech initiatives.
  • Lead new member orientations and annual strategy sessions to ensure ongoing engagement and value.
  • Partner with member success and operations teams to monitor account health and mitigate retention risk

Community and Program Participation

  • Facilitate participation of assigned accounts in collaborative groups, Innovation Leadership Networks, task forces, and community initiatives.
  • Develop communications, meeting agendas, and resources in support of member priorities.
  • Highlight and promote exemplar institutions and implementations within the ecosystem.
  • Engage with partner organizations, including EDUCAUSE, AACRAO, UPCEA, WCET, and others, to expand market awareness and adoption.

Cross-Team Coordination

  • Work closely with the Member Success, Marketing, and Technology teams to deliver a unified member experience.
  • Ensure account activity, external engagements, and member conversations are communicated proactively with relevant colleagues.
  • Share insights from accounts to inform product direction, standards development, and ecosystem strategy.

  • Maintaining transparency and proactive communication with colleagues across the Ecosystem Development team
  • Treating member relationships as organizational assets and ensuring engagement is coordinated and visible, not siloed

  • Demonstrating consistent, sustained alignment with team operating norms
  • Building trust with members and colleagues through reliability, professionalism, and follow-through

Qualifications

Experience

  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of experience in higher education, edtech, member engagement, partnerships, or account management

  • Demonstrated ability to drive membership growth, retention, and engagement within a membership or standards organization
  • Familiarity with account-based engagement models, including dual-sided market dynamics
  • Experience facilitating collaborative activities and meetings with senior technical and non-technical leaders
  • Preferred: Direct experience working within a higher education institution in an IT, academic technology, instructional design, or administrative capacity, bringing firsthand knowledge of the operational and strategic pressures that interoperability standards are designed to solve
  • Preferred: Deep working knowledge of the commercial edtech landscape, including key players, buying cycles, procurement processes, and how technology providers make decisions about standards participation and certification, ideally from having worked in or sold to the edtech market

Knowledge

  • Deep, earned knowledge of both the higher education and commercial edtech ecosystems, grounded in experience rather than observation.
  • Working knowledge of 1EdTech standards, including LTI, CASE, Open Badges, CLR, Caliper, and Edu-API; direct experience with any of these in an institutional or commercial context is a strong plus
  • Current on educational technology trends, digital credential strategy, and institutional priorities and challenges in higher education

Skills

  • Build and manage relationships across complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
  • Ability to engage credibly with both higher education institutional leaders and technology company stakeholders
  • Cross-functional coordination and the ability to operate effectively in a collaborative team model
  • Clear communication across technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities
  • Ability to connect institutional needs with provider solutions and ecosystem opportunities
  • Self-directed with strong problem-solving skills and a high degree of initiative

Education

  • Minimum 4-year bachelor's degree required; Master’s Degree or above preferred.
