Technical Program Manager

We have an opening for a technical program manager with knowledge of 1EdTech enterprise open standards OneRoster®, LTI®, and Caliper Analytics®.

The program manager serves as the product (standards) owner, responsible for advancing the success of the standards in the market, facilitating member technical project group sessions, and coordinating and managing contributions from members—software architects, engineers, and developers—to the assigned standards.

The program manager facilitates an agile software specification development process, is skilled at coordinating internal resources and third parties, and develops project plans to advance and track progress on their assigned standards products.

They will own the product’s information on 1EdTech websites, oversee communication in product-related member forums, and coordinate the development and delivery of impactful resources to communicate and support market adoption of the open standards. The technical program manager organizes and ensures specification releases are kept on track and delivered on schedule within scope.

Responsibilities

  • Be the owner of your assigned standards products for development and market adoption   
  • Manage regular project working groups composed of 1EdTech members in collaboration with 1EdTech colleagues providing architecture and engineering 
  • Respond to routine member and public inquiries related to your standards portfolio 
  • Coordinate support for members’ adoption and certification of products to be compliant with standard 
  • Help develop and advance project management best practices in the program management team
  • Coordinate with members and colleagues to define and document product value, features, requirements, scope, plans, and outcomes
  • Coordinate the development of published standards, implementation guides, and related resources to help members adopt the standards 
  • Work with 1EdTech management, steering committees, and project working groups to develop the product roadmap, maintain updated priorities and allocate resources across projects
  • Provide weekly status updates to staff and management
  • Guide and coach project group participants in adopting agile best practices and values
  • Implement related work under 1EdTech governance policies and practices
  • Maintain Github repositories related to specification development and software libraries 
  • Foster and grow member community engagement  
  • Recruit prospective organizations to participate as Contributing Members 
  • Contribute to 1EdTech growth by understanding and responding to market needs 
  • Represent 1EdTech at member meetings and other industry events via presentations and other communications

Key Skills and Qualifications

  • 4+ years managing technology projects, of which at least two years should be managing projects using agile/scrum methodologies
  • Excellent communication skills, organization, and attention to detail
  • Flexibility to adapt to the changing needs of the market
  • Experience using and maintaining Github repositories or related tools
  • Knowledge and experience with 1EdTech standards and APIs are desirable
  • Embraces ownership in the success of one or more 1EdTech standards products 
  • A quick learner, self-directed possessing excellent problem-solving skills
  • Enjoys helping others solve problems
  • Technical support or customer service experience
  • Technical writing experience
  • Comfortable presenting technical information to a general or technical audience

Job Type: Full-time

  • Provides an average minimum of 40 hours of work to perform the above services.
  • Normal hours of operation are 9-5 based on the US Eastern time zone 

Location: Remote

Travel: 3-4 times per year to attend 1EdTech-hosted meetings in locations primarily in the United States. Other periodic and incidental travel may also be necessary.

Job Requisition

Technical Standards Architect

We have an opening for a technical standards architect to join the 1EdTech team of professionals.

Collaborating with product engineering leaders in the edtech market, in partnership with a program manager within a workgroup setting, the 1EdTech standards architect takes the lead in organizing interoperability requirements and developing and publishing data interoperability specifications, data models, and API definitions based on members' needs.

The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of 1EdTech and other technology standards. Experience in commercial product development is also a big plus.

The successful candidate will be able to lead technical topics in project workgroups, possess the skills to provide consultative technical support to members implementing the standards, and demonstrate the software development skills needed to create and update software libraries and tools members need for successful integrations, including explaining the use of the standards to implement priority market use cases.

The selected architect should be able to effectively communicate technical details to technical and non-technical audiences verbally, in writing, and in presentations. The architect will ensure the standards within their leadership are integrated with other 1EdTech standards and practices in a cohesive educational technology ecosystem.

Responsibilities

  • Standards specification development, as well as the creation of implementation guides and compliance instructions in the assigned area of responsibility as well as contributing to the requirements and development of software reference implementations and conformance certification software which help members more quickly implement 1EdTech open standards 
  • Lead the technical review of member contributions to standards development in regular project working groups and task forces
  • Advance possible solutions to interoperability challenges in the EdTech ecosystem
  • Lead with consensus-based best practices in the creation of member-contributed developer guides and assist with authoring and editing the documents
  • Adopt an agile method of development to publish minimal viable products quickly and refine and iterate over time 
  • Provide timely technical guidance and consultation to 1EdTech member organizations to facilitate their understanding, adoption, certification, and implementation testing as needed
  • Actively contribute knowledge articles to the 1EdTech support site, knowledge base, and member's forum via frequently asked questions and answers, including responding to 1EdTech member-posted questions
  • Work to promote a community of developers and implementers via active collaboration, providing support and tools to grow and foster community participation by members
  • Support the assigned program manager responsible for organizing workgroups, planning and communicating workgroup activities
  • In collaboration with the certification engineering team, track issues and concerns related to compliance certification for improvements to the test suite
  • Lead the alignment of assigned standards with other 1EdTech standards and ecosystem-wide standards such as security, data, and other cross-cutting topics and contribute to those 1EdTech ecosystem efforts
  • Provide member training and bootcamps to help speed adoption and implementations
  • Occasionally represent 1EdTech at various meetings and conferences as agreed in advance
  • Help to grow and provide direction for future 1EdTech standards development
  • Work closely with colleagues on the 1EdTech staff, attending regular staff calls
  • Ensure members receive priority support
  • Maintain member confidential information, including technical specification details, before public release

Job Type: Full-time
